Hurricane Relief Efforts Underway

Batteries, food and other donations being organized for distribution

Hurricane Sandy devastated many communities in the New York and New Jersey area, and some of the hardest hit are in our back yard here on Staten Island. Like many other Staten Islanders, El Centro and our members are working to help our neighbors in the relief effort. We ask that you join us in helping the long process of the recovery effort.

On Sunday and Monday November 4th and 5th, a group of Day Laborers from El Centro traveled to Midland Beach to distribute supplies and offer free labor to help families remove debris and clean their homes. More photos of our efforts can be seen here.
El Centro is also assisting victims with clothing, food, housing and orientation on how to apply for assistance.
Staff from the “Department of Protection” of the Consulate General of Mexico will be present indefinitely at El Centro starting November 6th.

According to victims in the area, the most needed items are:
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Heavy duty garbage bags
  • Cleaning supplies (Clorox, Fantastic, Mr. Clean)
  • Scrub brushes
  • Work gloves
  • Blankets
  • Sleeping bags
  • School supplies (notebooks, pens/pencils, markers, backpacks)
  • Gift cards to pathmark, shoprite, lowes, home depot
Items can be dropped off at 1546 Castleton Ave.
Volunteers are needed to sort donations, travel to affected areas and offer free labor.
